Crito

Filters

Ask your assistant to narrow case searches by jurisdiction or court level.

Tell your assistant which jurisdictions or courts to include. You can ask in plain language, either in your first question or as a follow-up. Your assistant applies the filters when it searches Crito. You do not need court codes or special commands.

Filter by jurisdiction

Name the province or ask for federal court decisions.

Use Crito to find Ontario cases about wrongful dismissal. Include only decisions from Ontario courts.

Find cases about contract interpretation from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Keep the results for each province separate.

You can ask for one province or several. Your assistant can search each jurisdiction and combine the results.

A jurisdiction filter selects where a decision comes from. It does not find every decision that discusses that province's law. To include decisions from other courts, ask your assistant to widen the search.

Filter by court level

Say whether you want appeal decisions, trial decisions, or decisions from a particular court. Include the jurisdiction so your assistant can select the right courts.

Find Ontario appeal decisions about contract interpretation. Limit the search to the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Find trial decisions about construction disputes from the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Search only Supreme Court of Canada decisions about procedural fairness.

Court names and levels differ by jurisdiction. Your assistant translates a request such as “appeal courts only” into searches of the relevant courts. If you mean a specific court, name it. For example, “Supreme Court of Canada” and “Supreme Court of British Columbia” select different courts.

Change filters in a follow-up

You can adjust the scope without writing the whole question again:

  • “Keep the same issue, but search Manitoba instead.”
  • “Now limit the results to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.”
  • “Include trial decisions as well.”
  • “Add Supreme Court of Canada decisions, and show them separately.”

Ask your assistant to state which jurisdictions and courts it searched if you want to check the scope of an answer.

Filters apply within Crito's available coverage. If a narrow search finds no cases, ask your assistant to search more courts or jurisdictions.
