Terms of service
The terms that govern use of Crito.
Last updated: October 7, 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the Crito website, account dashboard, and MCP server (the “Service”), operated by Crito (“we”, “us”, “our”).
When you use the Service, you (“you”, “your”) agree to these Terms. If you agree for a law firm, company, or other organization, you confirm that you have the authority to bind it.
1. The Service
Crito gives your AI client access to Canadian court decisions, statutes, and regulations over the Model Context Protocol (MCP). You connect Crito to an AI client that you choose, for example Claude or ChatGPT. Your AI client calls Crito tools, and Crito returns source text. Your AI client, not Crito, writes the answers you see.
We offer an Individual plan and free access for eligible users. See Pricing for the current plans.
2. Not legal advice
2.1 Research tool. The Service is a research tool. Crito is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. Use of the Service does not make a lawyer-client relationship between you and us.
2.2 Check the source. AI clients can misread, misquote, or invent authorities. Our coverage of courts and legislation is not complete, and source text can contain errors. You are responsible for checking each authority against an official source, and for your professional judgment, before you rely on it or give it to a client, court, or other person.
3. Accounts
3.1 One person. An account is for one person. Do not share your account or let other people use your connections.
3.2 Free access. Free access is for students who are currently enrolled at a school on our list, and for people who work or volunteer at a legal clinic or legal-aid non-profit that we approve. Students must sign up with their school email address. If you are no longer eligible, you must change to the Individual plan. We can end free access if you are not eligible.
3.3 Security. Keep your sign-in details secure. Tell us immediately at hi@crito.fyi if you think someone else used your account. You are responsible for activity on your account.
4. Acceptable use
You must not:
- Use scripts or automation to download data from the Service in bulk;
- Copy, sell, or redistribute the Service, or build a competing database from it;
- Try to get access to systems or accounts that are not yours, or try to defeat our security;
- Put an unreasonable load on the Service; or
- Use the Service in a way that breaks the law.
Plans have no hard usage limit. We record usage, and we will contact you if your use looks automated. We can limit or suspend access that breaks this section.
5. Privacy
We do not see your conversation with your AI client. We receive only the tool calls it sends. We do not keep query text, and we do not use queries to train AI models. The Privacy Policy tells how we handle your data, and it is part of these Terms.
If the law or a court orders us to disclose your data, we will tell you before we disclose it, if the law lets us.
6. Intellectual property
6.1 Your content. You keep all rights in your queries and in the work you make with the Service.
6.2 Legal sources. Court decisions and legislation are public documents. The courts and governments that publish them can have terms that apply to how you use them.
6.3 Our Service. We keep all rights in the Service, including its software, database, search indexes, and website, and in all improvements to them.
7. Fees and payment
7.1 Subscriptions. Plans are billed monthly, in advance, in Canadian dollars. Fees do not include tax. You must pay all applicable taxes.
7.2 Free trial. First-time subscribers get a 14-day free trial. A card is required. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, we charge your card and your plan renews each month.
7.3 Cancellation. You can cancel at any time from your dashboard. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period. Fees already paid are not refundable.
7.4 Price changes. We can change our prices. We will tell you by email before a new price applies to your plan. The new price starts at your next renewal after the notice.
7.5 Failed payments. If a payment fails, we can suspend access until you update your payment method.
8. Disclaimer
EXCEPT AS THESE TERMS SAY, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”. WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY, OR OTHER, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR FREE OF ERRORS, OR THAT ITS CONTENT IS COMPLETE, CURRENT, OR ACCURATE.
9. Limitation of liability
9.1 Excluded damages. NEITHER PARTY IS LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, LOST REVENUE, OR LOSS OF DATA, THAT ARE CAUSED BY OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS, EVEN IF THAT PARTY KNEW THAT SUCH DAMAGES WERE POSSIBLE.
9.2 Liability cap. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY CAUSED BY OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS IS NOT MORE THAN THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT THAT CAUSED THE LIABILITY.
10. Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Crito and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from all claims, losses, damages, and costs (including reasonable legal fees) caused by or related to: (a) your breach of these Terms; or (b) your use of the Service or its results, including in legal services that you give.
11. Term and termination
11.1 Term. These Terms apply while you use the Service.
11.2 Termination by you. You can stop use of the Service and cancel your plan at any time.
11.3 Termination by us. We can suspend or close your account if you break these Terms. If the breach can be fixed, we will first give you notice and 30 days to fix it.
11.4 Effect. When these Terms end, your right to use the Service stops. Sections 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 12 continue to apply.
12. General
12.1 Governing law. The laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply in Ontario govern these Terms, without regard to conflict of law rules.
12.2 Courts. The courts of Ontario, sitting in Toronto, have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes about these Terms.
12.3 Changes. We can change these Terms. We will put the date of the last change at the top. If a change is important, we will tell you by email or on the website before it starts. If you continue to use the Service after a change, you accept the new Terms.
12.4 Severability. If a court finds that part of these Terms is not valid, the other parts continue to apply.
12.5 Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the full agreement between you and us about the Service. They replace all earlier agreements about it.
